Bernini. Rape of Persephone. 1621.
I finally got to see this one in person a couple of months ago and it lives up to the hype. Bernini might be one of the greatest realist sculptors ever. He portrays the body in such incredibly accurate detail. And that hand pressing into the flesh of Persephone’s thigh has got to be one of the most amazing details in art history.
But what I also love about Bernini is the dynamism of his sculptures. You can’t simply view them from one angle but you have to walk around and experience them from all sides. And the spiraling composition is such a classic Baroque convention.
